“I was in the Navy in late 70s and early 80s. In 1979, I was stationed on a submarine that was in Portsmouth Naval shipyard undergoing an overhaul. One of our nukes (an enlisted sailor who worked on the reactor) was found to be gay and was thrown out of the Navy. I didn’t know him but everyone said he was great at his job and no one seemed to care who he slept with but he was discharged anyway.
The ironic part of the story was he was back on the boat a week later but now he worked as a tech rep for Westinghouse (reactor manufacturer) making quite a bit more money.
I always thought it was a dumb decision and an absolute waste to get rid of a valuable crew member.
Edit: grammar”
“This tombstone goes hard. This man had true manliness in him for sure”
“That’s very powerful, especially “a discharge for loving one”.”
