“As someone who fled fires in NorCal 3x between 2017 and 2022 this pic hits my heart.
It’s really something to see everything you own, everything in your sight covered in so much ash it looks like snow and then you gradually absorb the fact that those ashes are people, animals, houses, farms, wildlife, and so on.
Wildfires are brutal. There’s not much worse than looking over your shoulder all the time trying to find smoke, hyper vigilant to the wind conditions, wind direction, trying to assess how much of your life can you fit in your car. We had 2 Nubian goats, 12 chickens, 2 cats, and 3 dogs (and two adults) and a Toyota truck. We deduced we could leave all things and simply flee with all our animals and the things they needed to survive.
When fire was a mere 24 miles away, the wind changed direction. We got very, very lucky.”
